Challis Close
Art Under the Bridge Festival

September 2009, DUMBO, Brooklyn

You are invited to the free Art Under the Bridge Festival in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn on September 25-27th, 2009. The festival is the largest urban forum of its kind for experimental art in the United States and celebrates art that is touchable, accessible, and interactive.

Jude Broughan’s installation Challis Close, located at 37 Main Street in the large boiler room window next to Powerhouse Books, is a arrangement of ten lit and unlit assemblages that gently parody the conventional commercial lightbox form via subtle allusions to imperfection and fallibility. The “unfinished” look of works connotes a state of becoming, a condition with it’s own use value that stands in opposition to the desire for hermetically sealed perfection. The visible power cords and hanging parts -- the works’ “workings” -- remain visible because they hold their own peculiar fascination. Revolving around ideas and images of home and travel, sustenance and growth, “naturalness” and artifice, the recontextualized and the brand-new, the work’s salvaged materials and fragmented look that cast human idiosyncrasies in a celebratory light.

September 25-27th
festival hours: Friday 6-9, Saturday 12-9, Sunday 12 - 9
